Structure

Chassis

19-Inch Rack Standard

Devices on a Rack are attached with bolts on the side rails, and stack vertically.

Vertical space is measured in Rack Units, and the minimum height is 1U.

  • Common standard and hardware
  • Units stack vertically
  • 1U = 1¾” (44.45mm)

Frame

Eurorack Rail Standard

Devices on a Eurorack frame are bolted into the top and bottom rails that contain sliding nuts.

Horizontal space is measured in HP units (1HP = 0.2″).

A Eurorack frame is 3U in height, and 84HP in width.

  • Common standard and hardware
  • Units stack horizontally
  • 1HP = 0.2″ (5.08 mm)
  • 84HP = 16.8″ (426.72mm)
  • 3U 5¼” (133.3 mm)

Eurorack Case

A Eurorack enclosure does not necessarily require a 19-Inch rack. Eurorack rails are available in many lengths, and can be custom built or purchased as a ready-made case.

Module

A KontrolRack Module consists of a Eurorack-style faceplate with controls mounted to the surface.

Faceplate

A standard 84HP Eurorack rail is designed to fit a standard 19-Inch Rack. To fit that size, standard KontrolRack Modules are one of three widths that correspond to fractions of the total 84HP width. This makes it easier to mix and match Modules across a row.

Templates for faceplates and backplates can be found at:

Guardrails

Guardrails can be used to prevent inadvertent control activation, or where a hand rest is helpful.

A Guardrail must attach at 4″-centers. Standard “wire drawer pulls” will work, or any style that fits 4″.

A 4″ Guardrail fits within the height of a Module

Guardrail mounting holes are located on the left and right edges of the Faceplate.

Hardware

A Module Faceplate is attached to Eurorack Rails with M3 x 6mm screws. Guardrails are optional. The hardware that attaches faceplates to their backplates all use the same bolt and thread size: #8-32.

A Backplate is attached using #8-32 x 3″ long standoffs, with a male end to fit the Guardrail.

Backplate standoffs are screwed either into the Guardrails, or fastened with #8-32 “cap nuts” if there are no Guardrails.

The Guardrail bolt size is #8-32 x ½” long. Bolts such as a #8-32 x ½” hex socket-head screws can be used to fasten to the standoff on the end opposite the “cap nuts”.

Use nylon washers to separate metal from plastic parts. The washer size for #8-32 bolts is M4 x 8mm OD x 1mm.
